Schools and districts around the country are at various stages when it comes to their transition to using the Science of Reading to guide instruction. Some have been all-in with SOR since the beginning, others are holding steadfast on using leveled readers and a general guided reading approach, while many others are somewhere in the middle–ready to implement programs that align with the Science of Reading but not ready to completely walk away from their leveled readers. If your school falls in one of the latter two groups, this program can be used to transition teachers. Because of its emphasis on all parts of Scarborough’s Reading Rope, many elements will feel familiar to all teachers; this includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, phonemic awareness, and word work activities. These are all activities that great teachers in classrooms across the country have been using, regardless of which reading approach they use. This program just takes all those important elements and adds in a systematic, explicit scope and sequence for teaching decoding skills that helps students become more proficient readers. Rather than using books that are leveled based on overall reading ability, the program uses books that focus on the specific sounds and/or skills being taught. These books are professionally written and illustrated to support the program’s scope and sequence, and we have found that students become just as engaged in these stories as they would other texts written for students in grades K-3.
